Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio
The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Return
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
